Friends, if you’ve been to my blog before, then you may know that I am the smoothie QUEEN. If you are looking for a delicious smoothie recipe that is healthy without tasting like it, then I have got you. Whether you’re making my creamy Raspberry Coconut Cloud Smoothie, or my decadent German Chocolate Cake Smoothie, I promise that you will feel less like you are drinking a smoothie and more like you are eating dessert. And truly, what could be better than that?

And when it comes to smoothies that taste like dessert, this Sweet Potato Apple Pie Smoothie is absolutely it. This smoothie starts with a base of creamy sweet potato, blended until smooth and creamy. Freshly grated apples and a touch of cinnamon are added for a tart and spicy flavor. A sprinkle of maca powder and a hint of almond extract bring out the warm, cozy flavors of apple pie. And if you really want to take it to the next level, you can even top it with a dollop of coconut cream. Yum.

This is the perfect smoothie to take us from winter into spring, as it’s full of warm and cozy flavors like sweet potato, yet is cool and refreshing thanks to the apple. It is truly my newest smoothie obsession, and I can’t wait for you to try it!

What You Need to Make This Cozy Apple Pie Smoothie

    • Sweet Potato: Sweet potato is a true superfood; loaded with tons of fiber and antioxidants, sweet potatoes have been shown to have a positive impact on both gut and hormone health! I recommend using pre-cut, frozen sweet potato chunks in this recipe. But, if you are using fresh sweet potato, that is totally fine too! Just be sure to add a few extra ice cubes to this smoothie, to make sure it stays nice and cold.
    • Apple: You can use any variation of apples that you prefer, in this smoothie.
    • Frozen Banana: I highly recommend using frozen bananas in this smoothie. Why? Because the ice from the frozen fruit will add texture to this smoothie, making it nice and thick without watering it down. This is my favorite smoothie “hack” for achieving the perfect smoothie texture, every time!

You can add more milk to your smoothie in order to “thin” it out

Once your smoothie is done, pour it into a glass and serve immediately
    • Vanilla Protein Powder: While you *can* use unflavored protein powder in this recipe, I do love the hint of vanilla that the vanilla protein powder adds. It truly makes this smoothie taste like dessert!
    • Maca Powder: Maca root contains high levels of iron and iodine, and has been shown to have helpful benefits for women’s hormones. Plus, it has a slightly caramel-y flavor, which tastes delicious in this smoothie!
    • Cinnamon: Cinnamon and sweet potatoes is an unbeatable combination, and adds the perfect balance of flavors to this recipe. Don’t skip this!
    • Almond Extract: Almond extract is the key to making this smoothie taste just like apple pie! You can also use vanilla extract in place of the almond, but I highly, highly recommend the almond.
    • Milk of Choice: Any type of milk works well here!
    • Hemp Hearts: This is optional and acts more like a garnish, but adds the perfect amount of texture and crunch to this smoothie! Plus, if you’re looking to hit your protein goals, it adds the perfect extra boost of protein.

Easy Ingredient Swaps & Additions to Make This Recipe Healthy & Delicious

    1. Use any milk that you desire, be it oat milk, almond milk, or dairy milk. With milk prices on the rise, why not try using some homemade oat milk for this smoothie? Not only can you make a big batch of it in seconds, but it is also a fraction of the price of buying store-bought oat milk!
    2. If you want this smoothie to be extra thick, freeze your bananas, chopped apples, and chopped sweet potato ahead of time. The frozen fruit + veggies will add texture to this smoothie and make it nice and thick, without watering it down.
    3. If you want to add in even MORE veggies (say, for picky kids who may not enjoy getting their veggies in), try adding in 1/4 cup of frozen cauliflower rice! Cauliflower rice adds an extra dose of fiber and veggies to the smoothie, without altering the flavor or texture.
    4. If you don’t have almond extract, use vanilla extract to really give this smoothie its apple pie flavor! I highly recommend using almond extract for the most authentic flavor, but vanilla extract is a good substitute.

My 13 year old daughter and I both love this smoothie! We have been making it with Truvani’s vanilla chai spiced protein powder. I love sending my (picky vegetarian) kiddo off to school knowing she’s starting the day with a healthy dose of protein, fruits and veggies!
