Friends, is there anything better than ice cream in the summertime? I don’t know about you, but there are few things that I love more than a nice cold bowl of ice cream or sorbet in the summertime. And while I love taking my boys out for a sweet treat at our favorite San Francisco ice cream shops, I also love to make it at home… and for a few different reasons.

The first, is that homemade ice cream always tastes better, and that’s because you can control exactly what you put in it! If you like it more on the sweeter side, you can always add in more sweetener. If you like it more savory, you can add in a pinch of sea salt to help balance out the flavors. Plus, when you make ice cream or sorbet at home, it’s much easier to make healthier swaps that are easy and delicious!

For example… this viral sorbet recipe. While most sorbet recipes are loaded with added sugars, fillers, and additives, this 1-Ingredient Tangerine Sorbet is made from just one ingredient… frozen tangerines! Which means that this sorbet is free from refined sugars, free from oils or fillers, and is just sweet, refreshing, and delicious. If you’re looking for a healthy sweet treat to prep ahead for your kids this summer (or for you, I’m not judging!) you will absolutely love this recipe. Oh, and speaking of not judging, I also won’t judge you if you decide to pour a shot of your favorite liquor over the sorbet… try it out and thank me later. 😉

A beige tray holds several whole and partially peeled tangerines. More tangerines, some peeled and some in segments, are scattered on a marble surface nearby. An ice cream scoop sits to the side.
To make this sorbet, you’ll only need one ingredient: tangerines!
A baking sheet covered with neatly arranged, bright orange mandarin orange segments, viewed from above. The surface is metallic and the fruit pieces are spread evenly across it.
Peel the tangerines and add them to a baking sheet. Transfer them to the freezer overnight, until they’re rock solid.

The ONE Ingredient You’ll Need to Make This Sorbet

Just as the title says, this sorbet only requires ONE recipe in order to make it, and that is tangerines. That’s right, you really don’t need anything else in order to make this sorbet! The only ingredient that you need to make it is peeled and frozen tangerines, and this right here is the key. They MUST be frozen.

The hardest part about making this recipe is, by far, waiting overnight for the tangerines to freeze. This is the key to making sure they are rock solid. If the tangerines are still soft, they won’t process into a thick and creamy sorbet, easily. Does this mean that you have to be patient with this recipe? Yes. But, is it also worth it? Double-yes.

Plus, since this sorbet takes on a light, refreshing orange flavor, it’s perfect for pairing with any of your favorite toppings! I love adding shaved chocolate on top, but my Date-Sweetened Caramel adds a delicious creamy finish. Craving more sweet and salty? Add some of my 3-Ingredient Homemade Tahini on top. Or, pour some coconut condensed milk on top for a delicious sorbet that tastes like a coconut orange creamsicle. There’s no limit to what you can do!

Once the tangerine slices are frozen, transfer them to a food processor and process until smooth.

How to Make This Simple & Easy Summer Treat

To make this sorbet, start by preparing the tangerines. Peel the tangerines and line them up on a baking sheet. Transfer them to the freezer and allow them to freeze overnight.

Once the tangerines are frozen, remove them from the freezer and transfer the frozen slices to a food processor. Process the tangerines until they are smooth and come together. At first, the mixture will be crumbly, but trust the process — it will come together!

Once it’s done, use an ice cream scoop to remove the sorbet from the food processor and scoop it into bowls. Add chocolate shavings or your favorite toppings on top, then serve and enjoy!

A food processor bowl filled with finely chopped or grated orange mixture sits on a marble surface. Nearby are whole oranges on a plate and a clear bowl with a spoon.
Process the tangerines until they come together and form a sorbet. It will be crumbly at first, but will eventually come together!
Two oval bowls each contain three scoops of orange sorbet, garnished with shredded coconut and orange segments. Spoons rest in each bowl, with peeled tangerines and segments scattered nearby on a light surface.
Use an ice cream scoop to scoop the sorbet into bowls. Garnish with your favorite toppings, then serve and enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true that this recipe only requires ONE ingredient?

Yes, it’s true! Unlike some recipes (which will claim that they’re only one ingredient but actually require three) this recipe comes together with just frozen tangerine slices. That is it!

How long will this sorbet stay fresh for?

When stored in the freezer, this sorbet should stay fresh for up to one month. Although be warned: it’s so good, it may not last in your household longer than a day!

What can I top this sorbet with?

While this sorbet is delicious as-is, you can top it with any of your favorite ice cream ingredients! I love adding in shaved chocolate, chocolate syrup, my homemade date caramel, some of my homemade tahini for a salty-sweet finish, or even some coconut condensed milk. The options are truly endless! Yummm.
