Viral Raspberry Custard Toast – as seen on TikTok!

 January 26, 2022

If you’re wondering how “custard” and “toast” can go together, then you’re not alone – when this recipe first started trending on TikTok, I was slightly skeptical about how well the combination could work together. But let me tell you, after trying it out for myself, I am OBSESSED. My Viral Raspberry Custard Toast recipe comes together with only 6 ingredients and in under 20 minutes, and is perfect as a delicious and sweet breakfast, or as a fun afternoon snack!

Let’s be honest – most of the time, TikTok food trends are very hit-or-miss. But every once in a while, a trend comes along that blows my expectations out of the water. I first experienced this early last year, when Pasta Chips were all the rage, and now, I’m experiencing it with my Raspberry Custard Toast.

But let’s be real for a second – like with most things, TikTok did not create Custard Toast. In fact, the Viral Custard Toast that we’ve come to know and love can be thought of as a western iteration of Taiwanese “Brick Toast”, which is commonly served at bubble tea shops across Southeast Asia, and parts of the United States. In the traditional version, the base of the Brick Toast is a spongy milk bread, which is then topped with a mixture of condensed milk, eggs, and sometimes even butter, to create a custard-like texture. Then, the toast is baked, and topped with a wide range of ingredients, from berries to chocolate to even whipped cream. Although I haven’t tried it myself yet, it certainly sounds delicious, and I know I’ll be stopping by a bubble tea shop here in San Francisco to see if I can get my hands on this treat.

Until then, however, I’ll stick to my custard toast. My version is incredibly simple, and uses only 6 unique ingredients – greek yogurt, egg, honey, cinnamon, bread, and berries. It takes only a few minutes to whip up this delicious treat, and I love making it once or twice a week for a fun and exciting breakfast!

What You Need to Make This Raspberry Custard Toast

  • Greek Yogurt: I love using greek yogurt for this recipe, because it’s full of protein while also being thick enough to mimic that custard-like texture. You can substitute dairy-free yogurt here, if you prefer, but keep in-mind that the consistency will be less custard-like.
  • Egg: The basis of any custard recipe is the egg, and this custard toast recipe is no different! If you wanted to make this recipe vegan, you could try using the Just Egg egg-replacer, however I can’t guarantee that it’ll turn out the same. An eggless custard is difficult to create!
  • Honey: Honey adds sweetness to this Custard Toast while perfectly complimenting the berries that we’ll be using. Yum!
  • Cinnamon: I love the taste of cinnamon with berries, and when mixed with this custard toast recipe, it’s truly a delightful combination. This is optional, but I highly recommend it!
  • Sliced Bread: You can really use any bread for this recipe, but you know what works best? Good ole’ white sandwich bread. You can also use gluten-free bread if you prefer, for this recipe! And for a more traditional variation of this recipe, you could also use a Taiwanese milk bread.
  • Berries: I’m using raspberries in this recipe, which are my favorite berry to use here! However, you could also use blueberries or blackberries in this recipe. Any of the above would be delicious!

How to Make This Raspberry Custard Toast

  1. Start by taking your slices of bread (we’ll be using two for this recipe) and press down gently in the center of them with a fork. You want to make shallow indentations here, so that there’s room for the custard!
  2. Next, grab a small bowl and add-in the yogurt, egg, honey, and cinnamon. Whisk them together until fully combined.
  3. Transfer your custard mixture to the bread and spread it out evenly in the indentation.
  4. Top each toast slice with your berries.
  5. Place your toast in the air fryer at 350 F for 12 minutes. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can also bake it in the oven at 350 F for 18-19 minutes.
  6. Once done, serve immediately, and enjoy!
