Friends, summertime is officially in full-swing, and I don’t know about you, but I am so excited. There’s something about the long days and late nights, the good food and the fun times with friends that makes the summer completely irresistible. And what better way to top off an irresistible summer than with an irresistible drink in hand?

While I fully believe that there is room for ALL foods (and drinks!) in our diets, alcohol included, I also believe in making the choices that support our body’s nutritional needs. So, while you will definitely find me poolside, this summer, with The Best Avocado Margarita in hand, you will also find me, at times, with a mocktail. It’s all about balance, and doing what we can to support our bodies, while still enjoying the foods and drinks that we love.

So, whether you’re looking to ditch the alcohol this summer, or simply have a healthier option in your summertime drink rotation, I wanted to create a fun and refreshing GUT HEALTHY drink that is sure to keep you satisfied. And the best part is, since there’s no alcohol, you can drink as much as you want; no hangovers here!

But taking care of your gut health is more than just swapping out the alcohol from time-to-time. It’s about taking care of our bodies from the inside out, so that we can truly live our happiest, healthiest lives! Whether that involves taking a probiotic, eating more anti-inflammatory foods, or yes, ditching the alcohol, there are so many simple and easy steps that we can take to support our gut health and our overall well being!

What Makes This Mocktail Gut Healthy

While gut health is all the rage these days, especially on TikTok, when I make the claim that a recipe is gut healthy, I want you to know that there is science behind it. Why? Because it’s 2022 and I want you to know exactly WHY something is gut healthy, so you can be informed and empowered in regards to the decisions you make for your body. 🙂

That’s why I’ve teamed up with my friends at  Seed, the maker of the amazing DS-01™, to bring you this recipe. Seed’s DS-01™ is a huge part of my daily life, and is the number one product that I rely on for maintaining my optimal gut health!

For the past few years, I’ve been taking the Seed DS-01™, and it has been a game changer, and that’s because it’s both a probiotic and prebiotic rolled into one. And, not to mention, the capsule is made with two layers, so that the inner probiotic capsule actually makes it to your colon (and eventually the small intestine) intact.

Most probiotics on the market die in your stomach, thanks to our stomach acids and such, rendering them ineffective. And, Seed contains 53.6 Billion AFU, which means it’s powerful AF. Like all things in life, you can’t take a supplement for a day and expect it to work a miracle. Be consistent and commit to supporting your gut health. Trust me – it’s worth it.

If you want to try Seed for yourself, use code KALEJUNKIE15 for 15% off your first month’s supply.

But, back to the mocktail. What makes this mocktail gut-friendly is its use of ingredients picked straight from the Periodic Table of Microbiome Friendly Foods. This periodic table shows the most beneficial ingredients for supporting our gut health, and luckily, many of my favorite ingredients were on the list!

There are so many simple ways to support our gut health, and starting with food (and drinks!) is the easiest way to ensure that we’re taking care of our bodies from the inside out.

What You Need to Make This Gut Healthy Summer Mocktail

All you need are a few, simple, gut healthy ingredients to make this Berry Mocktail! But first, let’s highlight the stars of this recipe – aka our gut healthy ingredients:

  • Blueberries: Blueberries are rich in fiber which can help with inflammation levels, therefore creative a positive impact on our overall gut health! In addition, they are also rich in antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Plus, they also contain anthocyanins, which are a type of polyphenol which gives blueberries their characteristic blue color, and have a number of health promoting effects.
  • Strawberries: The fiber in strawberries has been shown to help regulate our digestion, making this mocktail recipe perfect with a nice meal! And, like blueberries, strawberries are also rich in antioxidants, in addition to Vitamin C. They also happen to be rich in ALA (aka Alpha linolenic acid), which is an essential omega-3 fatty acid.
  • Coconut Water: Coconuts (and coconut water!) are high in fiber and fat, and can help your body better absorb nutrients like vitamins A, D, E, and K, making them an overall superfood to keep in your diet! In particular, they contain Medium Chain Fatty Acids, which have been studied for effects on energy and glucose metabolism.
  • Raw Honey: Raw honey is rich in antioxidants and also prebiotic oligosaccharides, which help to feed your gut flora! Bonus points if you can use LOCAL raw honey, which has also been shown to boost your immunity, as well.

In addition to the above gut healthy ingredients, we’ll also be using the following ingredients:

  • Fresh Mint: Fresh mint leaves not only make for the perfect garnish, but they add the perfect flavor when mixed with the berries! Yum!
  • Lemon & Lime Juice: A splash of lemon juice and lime juice adds the perfect amount of tanginess to this mocktail.
  • Club Soda: After all, any good mocktail includes a little something fizzy! You can also opt to replace the club soda with sparkling water, if you prefer. I love Topo Chico in this recipe!

How to Make This Berry-Filled Mocktail Recipe

To make this mocktail recipe, simply start by adding your mint leaves to a pitcher and muddle them together.

Next, add in your lemon juice, lime juice, and raw honey, and stir until they are fully incorporated with the mint leaves. Add your club soda (or sparkling water) and coconut water in next and mix to combine.

Then, divide your mocktail amongst four glasses, filling them only about 1/2 – 3/4 of the way full. Top the glasses with your strawberries, blueberries, and a sprig of mint, if desired, and enjoy!
