Friends, have you seen that trend on TikTok recently where people are talking about their “death row” meals? In case you haven’t, or in case you aren’t aware of what a death row meal is, it is essential the final meal that one would eat before being sentenced to death. That sounds morbid, and it IS, but it also had me thinking: of all of the good food in the world, what would my final meal be?

While I was sitting here, contemplating this, one of my favorite meals of all-time popped into my head: the Ahi Tuna Tostadas from Tacolicious. If you’ve never been to Tacolicious, it is an absolutely delicious taco spot that is local to San Francisco. And while their Marina Girl Salad is a fan-favorite, I truly cannot get enough of their tuna tostadas.

Think: rich, fatty, sushi-grade tuna combined with creamy avocado and placed on top of a crispy tostada shell. It truly is a match made in heaven, and melts in your mouth perfectly. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Needless to say, I knew I had to make my own version of it. And I have to say… I think I nailed it.

If you are someone who doesn’t necessarily love raw fish, but WANTS to love it, then this is the perfect recipe for you. Who knows, you may just fall in-love with raw tuna after this!

What You Need to Make These Crispy Tuna Tostadas

  • Sushi-Grade Tuna: The key to this recipe is using sushi-grade tuna. Because we aren’t cooking this tuna, it’s super important that it is the highest quality / grade possible, to ensure that it is truly safe to eat. You can find sushi-grade tuna at most health food stores; I get mine from my butcher at Whole Foods!
  • Sesame Oil: Sesame oil adds a delicious, toasty flavor to the tuna that makes these tostadas truly shine.
  • Soy Sauce: The combination of soy sauce and sesame oil makes the perfect marinade for your tuna. If you want to keep this recipe gluten-free, you can substitute out the soy sauce for coconut aminos!

  • Green Onion & Sweet Onion: We’ll be using a combination of green onion and sweet onion in this recipe to add the perfect blend of flavors. Just make sure to slice them thin, since we’ll be serving them raw!
  • Fresh Ginger: Fresh ginger not only adds the perfect amount of spice and flavor, but also has nutritional benefits as well. Ginger has been shown to help improve digestion, which is especially great if you tend to have a more sensitive stomach!
  • Furikake Seasoning: If you’ve never had furikake seasoning, then friends, you are missing out! It is a delicious, crunchy, salty seasoning made up of seaweed, sesame seeds, herbs, and sea salt. I get mine from Trader Joe’s, but most grocery stores will have it in the “International” foods section!
  • Tostada Shells: Tostada shells make the perfect base for this recipe, and add a delicious crunch! If you don’t have tostada shells, you can also use tortilla chips in this recipe.
  • Avocado: Avocado adds the perfect amount of creaminess to these tostadas. Yum!

How to Make These Simple, Easy, & Delicious Tostadas

Making these tostadas is simpler than you may think! To make these tostadas, start by preparing your ahi tuna; cut your tuna into cubes and add them to a large bowl alongside the sesame oil, soy sauce, chopped green onion and sweet onion, and ginger. Next, toss to coat everything well, until the tuna cubes are fully coated in the sauce.

Then, cover your bowl with the tuna, then place it in the refrigerator to marinate for 30 minutes. This will ensure that the tuna soaks in all of those delicious flavors! Once the tuna is done marinating, place your tostada shells onto a plate and top with your sliced avocado, along with a spoonful of the tuna mixture.

Finally, garnish each tostada with furikake seasoning, serve, and enjoy!
