Gut Healthy Armenian Yogurt Drink (Tahn)

 January 14, 2023

When you’re craving a creamy, delicious drink that’s both filling and healthy, then let me introduce you to Tahn. Tahn is a traditional Armenian yogurt drink that consists of plain yogurt, cucumbers, and herbs. But my take on it also includes gut-healthy ingredients for a drink that will feel as good as it looks. As we move into 2023, this Gut Healthy Armenian Yogurt Drink is a new staple in my household, and I know will be a beloved staple in yours as well!

Friends, while I may be known for my healthy cookie and kale recipes, nothing tickles my heart more than sharing my spin on a traditional Armenian recipe. As the daughter of Armenian immigrants, Armenian recipes are near-and-dear to my heart. Not just because they help me to celebrate my culture and remind me of my family, but because they’re also what I used to eat growing up!

When I was a kid, I LOVED when my dad would whip up my favorite Armenian recipes, like a big refreshing bowl of Tabouleh served alongside tender Beef Kofta Kebabs. And on special occasions, I loved getting to wash down a traditional Armenian meal alongside a big glass of Tahn. Especially as the season starts to warm up, this drink is light, refreshing, and oh-so-delicious!

You might be wondering, “Nicole, what makes this drink gut healthy?” And the answer to that lies in two words: live cultures. Since this is a yogurt drink, the main ingredient in it is, of course, greek yogurt, which is full of natural probiotics and live, active cultures that help to feed the good bacteria in your gut, so it can continue to grow and thrive!

How to Make This Yogurt Drink Dairy-Free

And if you’re wondering if it’s possible to make your Tahn dairy-free or vegan-friendly, the answer is YES!

Simply replace the greek yogurt with a thick, dairy-free yogurt of choice! To keep this drink gut healthy, I recommend choosing a dairy-free yogurt that is fermented, high in probiotics, and lower in refined sugars. My all-time favorite is by The Coconut Cult!

What You Need to Make This Creamy, Delicious Yogurt Drink

You only need 6 ingredients to bring this simple and easy yogurt drink to life!

  • Greek Yogurt: Of course, the star of the show here is the greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is one of my favorite gut-healthy ingredients because it is lower in lactose and fermented, so it is full of billions of probiotics. Probiotics are the good bacteria that help to feed your gut, and are necessary for proper gut function!
  • Water: A little water will help to “thin” out the yogurt, so that it doesn’t get too thick!
  • English Cucumber: Cucumbers are not only an essential ingredient to Tahn, but they are hydrating and full of essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs!
  • Dried Mint: Dried mint gives this drink its perfect, minty, herbaceous flavor. Don’t skip this!
  • Sea Salt: A pinch of sea salt adds the perfect balance of flavors to this recipe!
  • Fresh Mint: This is optional, but fresh mint makes the perfect garnish to this drink! It not only adds color, but also helps to amplify the delicious, minty flavor of the Tahn!

How to Make This Simple & Easy Homemade Tahn

Making this Tahn is so simple and easy! I love having a big batch of this in my fridge to drink every single day. This recipe stays good, when kept in the fridge, for up to one week!

To make this Tahn, simply start by chopping your cucumber into slices. You can peel it first or keep the skin on for some extra fiber!

Next, add it to a blender along with the rest of your ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. If you prefer your drink to be thicker, you can add more yogurt or less water, and if you want it runnier, you can add more water until it reaches your desired consistency!

Once your drink is fully blended, pour it into a glass, garnish with a sprig of fresh mint (if desired), and enjoy! This recipe makes 6 drinks, so it’s perfect to serve a crowd, or store any leftovers in a juice jar or airtight container, in the fridge, for up to one week. Enjoy!

  1. This was a quick and easy way to get some fiber and protein in as a snack. I used Fake 0% Greek yogurt and it was very refreshing. I will try fresh mint next time as the dried mint didn’t add as much flavor as I would have liked. May try adding some lemon as well next time. I do love your recipes and blog!!

    • I am so glad that you enjoyed this recipe, Linda! I definitely recommend the fresh mint, as it truly adds an amazing flavor. Thank you so much for making this recipe, and for your review!
