If you love chocolate milk, then let me introduce you to the greatest thing since OG chocolate milk came onto the scene – Creamy, Dairy-Free “Nutella” Oat Milk. This delicious drink has only 5 ingredients, and takes just a few seconds to whip up. Oh, and it’s vegan, gluten-free, and refined sugar-free, too. This is the perfect recipe to make for your kids, or to simply satisfy the kid within you!
The other day, I shared a recipe for my favorite Homemade Oat Milk and was truly blown away by how simple it is to make oat milk from home! I believe I mentioned this in the post, but here in the San Francisco Bay Area, a carton of oat milk averages around $5, which if you ask me, is way too expensive – especially considering a lot of conventional oat milks are loaded with refined seed oils and sugars. Yuck.
Now, please don’t take this as me shaming ANYONE for their food choice, because that’s not my intent at all! Believe me, I love real sugar just as much as the next person. But rather, this is a call-out to the food manufacturers, who are up-charging for products that are loaded with unnecessary ingredients that can cause more harm than good. But anyway… I’ll get off my soapbox now. 😉
When I shared this recipe on TikTok, I got a lot of comments saying, “But Nicole, Nutella isn’t healthy!” and my friends, that is why we aren’t using “real” Nutella in this recipe. You absolutely can if you want to, but to keep this recipe truly dairy-free (and sans-refined ingredients), I’m using Nutiva’s Hazelnut Chocolate Spread. It tastes JUST like Nutella, but is made with better-for-you ingredients, and is totally dairy-free.
But as always, use what you have and work with it – and if that’s traditional Nutella, then that’s totally fine! Use what you can and what you have. It doesn’t need to be complicated. 🙂
What You Need to Make This Creamy Nutella Oat Milk
Like I mentioned above, all you need are 5 simple ingredients in order to make this Creamy, Dairy-Free Nutella Oat Milk! It’s truly so simple and easy, anyone can do it.
Rolled Oats: Whole, rolled oats are perfect for this recipe. If you’re gluten-free, just make sure to use gluten-free rolled oats.
Water: When making any milk-alternative, you need water. After all, the combination of the water and oats is how we make the milk!
Maple Syrup: To give our oat milk a light sweetness, I like to add maple syrup. You can also add in a date instead, if you prefer.
Salt: A pinch of salt will ensure that your oat milk isn’t too sweet!
Nutella OR Hazelnut Spread: In this recipe, we will be using the Nutiva Chocolate Hazelnut spread to give this milk a delicious, Nutella-like flavor. However, you can use a few tablespoons of traditional Nutella or any chocolate hazelnut spread that you’d like!
Vanilla Extract (optional): If you want to really bring out the sweetness of the Nutella flavor, then I recommend adding a touch of vanilla extract. But, it’s totally optional, and your oat milk will be delicious without it!
How to Make Homemade Oat Milk
Start by adding all of your oat milk ingredients to a blender- the rolled oats, water, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla extract (if desired).
Blend on high, until the oats are fully broken down into a milk-like consistency.
Next, add in a few tablespoons of your Nutella or chocolate hazelnut spread and blend until fully incorporated. I recommend tasting and adding in more of the spread, if desired.
Then, take a large mixing bowl and place a nut milk bag inside of it. If you don’t have a nut milk bag, you can also use a cheese cloth.
Pour your oat milk into the bag and slowly (and very gently) squeeze the milk into the bowl, letting it strain through the bag. The leftover pulp will remain in the bag, and that is totally okay.
Pour your strained milk into a mason jar or carafe, and enjoy!
You can store your milk in the fridge for up to one week.
