Healthy Birthday Cake Smoothie

 May 9, 2021

A nutritious, protein-packed smoothie that actually tastes like birthday cake? SIGN ME UP! Actually, sign YOU up! If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I don’t mess around when it comes to smoothies. I drink 1-2 smoothies each day (usually breakfast and post-workout), each carefully proportioned to make sure that my creations taste amazing. This birthday cake smoothie is simply delicious – you’ll think it’s your birthday every time you make it!

What you need to make this creamy, plant-based birthday cake smoothie

To make this smoothie, you’ll see that the ingredient list is super simple, and of course you can make substitutions based on what you have on hand at home. However, if you want your cookie to actually taste like birthday cake, I recommend that you use the ingredients that I have listed.

For instance, I know many people don’t have almond extract laying around at home. I think it’s totally worth buying, because it doesn’t taste like almonds – it tastes like a sugar cookie…hence it’s addition to this birthday cake smoothie. You can use vanilla extract instead, no worries – just know it will taste a bit different than the recipe I created.

  • Banana: I always love frozen bananas in my smoothie! I know that diet culture tells us to avoid bananas, but what gives? They are full of potassium and provide a ton of energy from natural sugar!
  • Rolled Oats: If you are strict gluten-free, make sure that you purchase oats that are labeled as gluten-free. You can use quick cut or regular, it doesn’t matter; but you cannot use steel cut oats.
  • Cashew butter: Cashew butter is key in a birthday cake smoothie. Of course you can sub for other nut butters and even seed butters, but the cashew butter helps with the birthday cake taste!
  • Maple syrup: We only need a dash of maple syrup, but don’t omit it. Again, this is an ingredient that contributes to the overall flavor of birthday cake.
  • Almond extract: I wish almond extract was more popular. It’s so underrated, but damn, it tastes so good. Per my note above, almond extract tastes like a sugar cookie, and I use it in so many things…even my Black Forest Smoothie
  • Oat milk: You can use any non-dairy milk you’ve like, I recommend oat.
  • Vanilla protein powder: You can use any protein powder you like – I’ve linked my favorite vanilla-flavored protein powder for you below, so be sure to snag that!

How to make this delicious birthday cake smoothie

I feel like it’s always a little goofy when bloggers spend an entire paragraph telling people how to make the smoothie. It’s quite simple. BLEND. And adjust the liquid as needed until you reach your desired consistency. Voila, simple!

YUM! I just made this smoothie & it was such a treat. I didn’t add rolled oats, so I added flaxseeds, chia seeds, & hemp seeds. Thank you for another delicious smoothie Nicole. Xoxo.

Absolutely LOVE this smoothie. I had never thought of using almond extract but it adds the best flavor! I love it according to the recipe but I have also been adding some frozen cranberries and love the zing they give. YUM!

    • Isn’t the almond extract so yummy?! Thank you so much for making this recipe, Eloise, and for leaving such a sweet review!

  4. I made this for breakfast this morning! I added a 1/2 cup of cauliflower and some spinach to mine for some extra sneaky nutrients. Next time I might leave out the oats, but other then that it was awesome. Highly recommend the maple syrup even if you think it tastes sweet enough as it- the flavor it adds is delicious! 😋

    • That sounds delicious Carynne! So happy it worked out so well for you, and thank you so much for your review!

  5. Hey! I made this smoothie tonight but instead of vanilla protein powder I just used some vanilla extra, it was so good! And actually does taste like cake batter!
