With the seasons turning from winter to spring, common colds and allergies are in the air. Which means, it’s time to give your immune system a boost with my Healthy Gut Immunity Shots. These shots are small but mighty, and are packed with a flavorful combination of fresh citrus, herbs, and apple cider vinegar for the perfect gut-healthy way to start your day!
Friends, whenever I am feeling under the weather, there are a few key recipes that I reach for. From my Gut Healthy Immunity Cubes to my Copycat Starbucks Medicine Ball, I make sure to always have the ingredients to make these in my freezer, during the wintertime. And one recipe I’ve recently added to that roster? These Healthy Gut Immunity Shots.
The last time I went to Los Angeles, I went to my favorite grocery store: Erewhon. While they are known for so many different (and delicious) things, they are famous for their juices and shots. With all of the holiday travel, I stocked up on some of their different immunity shots, and knew I could make my own.
While my version is similar to Erewhon’s, my take involves a variety of different gut-healthy ingredients. What makes something gut healthy, you may ask? Well, the “gut” refers to your gastrointestinal system, or GI system, which is responsible for breaking down the food we eat, absorbing the nutrients from it, and using those nutrients to support our body’s many different functions. So, any food that is gut-healthy, contains the good bacteria that your GI system needs to break food down. Needless to say, it’s super important.
Three Reasons Why You’ll Love These Shots
They are easy to prep-ahead: The good news is, this recipe makes 12 shots, which means you can easily prepare a week’s worth of immunity shots ahead of time!
They are less expensive than supplements: Immunity supplements can be expensive to buy, but these immunity shots are budget-friendly and made from just a few easy ingredients!
They come together in just a few steps: Simply add all of the ingredients to a blender, blend until smooth, strain out the pulp, and you’re good to go!
Add the sliced oranges, turmeric, and ginger to a blender, alongside the lemon, oregano oil (if using), cayenne pepper, apple cider vinegar, and water.
What You Need to Make These Easy Immunity Shots
Orange: Of course, these wouldn’t be healthy immunity shots without the oranges. Oranges are loaded with Vitamin C, and are the classic “under the weather” food.
Lemon: Lemon is full of antioxidants and packs a punch in these shots! Don’t skip it!
Fresh Ginger: Ginger is one of my favorite ingredients to consume when I’m sick, because it contains a compound called gingerol, which can help with any gastrointestinal issues. In other words, it can help ease nausea and an upset stomach. Both ground and fresh ginger work well, here.
Fresh Turmeric: Turmeric is a root that is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. While you can usually find fresh turmeric in most health food stores, you can also use ground ginger. Both work just as well!
Oregano Oil: This is optional, but highly recommended! Oil of oregano has been show to have antiviral and anti-fungal properties, making it the perfect ingredient to add to these immune-boosting shots.
Cayenne Pepper: Like oranges, cayenne pepper is packed with Vitamin C, giving these shots a spicy kick.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cinder vinegar is fermented and contains good bacteria that can be beneficial to your overall gut health. Woohoo!
Water: A little water helps these shots get nice and liquidy!
Blend until smooth, then divide the mixture amongst individual bottles.Once they’re done, store them in the fridge until you’re ready to drink them, and enjoy!
How to Make These Shots in Four Simple Steps
